“You think you’ve found somebody, so suddenly my program gets the ax?”
“It’s not about this kid that Graff found. It’s about the low quality of what you’ve been finding.”
‘We knew it was long odds. But the kids I’m working with are actually fighting a war just to stay alive.”
“Your kids are so malnourished that they suffer serious mental degradation before you even begin testing them. Most of them haven’t formed any normal human bonds, they’re so messed up they can’t get through a day without finding something they can steal, break, or disrupt.”

Bean groeit halverwege de 22e eeuw op als dakloze jongen in Rotterdam. Hij is onderdeel van een groep kinderen. Hij bedenkt een plan waardoor ze bij de plaatselijke gaarkeuken kunnen eten. Door deze actie valt hij op bij zuster Carlotta. Zij is een non die slimme kinderen zoekt die kunnen worden opgeleid voor de strijd tegen de Buggers (buitenaardse wezens). Ze zorgt ervoor dat Bean op Battle School terecht komt.
“I think I have someone for you.”
“You’ve thought that before.”
“He’s a born leader. But he does not meet your physical specifications.”
“Then you’ll pardon me if I don’t waste time on him.”
“If he passes your exacting intellectual and personlaity requierements, it is quite possible that for a minuscule portion of the brass button or toilet paper budget of the I.F. His physical limitations might be repaired.”
“I never knew nuns could be sarcastic.”
“I can’t reach you with a ruler. Sarcasm is my last resort.”
“Let me see the tests.”
“I’ll let you see the boy. And while we’re at it, I’ll let you see another.”
“Also physically limited?”
“Small. Young. But so was the Wiggin boy, I hear. And this one – somehow on the streets he taught himself to read.” (blz. 40)
Bean wordt aangenomen. De andere kinderen willen geen vrienden met hem worden. Ze vinden hem te klein en te jong. Bean heeft dus tijd om op zoek te gaan naar informatie. Hij is erg slim en wil weten hoe alles in elkaar zit. Hij is ambitieus en gaat op zoek naar informatie om zo snel mogelijk een leider te worden. Hij wil er ook achterkomen waarom er duizenden kinderen worden getraind op Battle School. Is de oorlog tegen de buitenaardse wezens zo belangrijk?
I can learn all the military theory and history that I want, and it will do me no good if they never entrust me with command. And I will never be placed in charge of an army of a fleet unless they have reason to believe that other men would follow me. (blz. 194)
Bean raakt bevriend met Ender Wiggins. Een jongen die ook buiten de groep valt, een geboren leider. Samen gaan ze de strijd tegen de pestkoppen aan. Ook oefenen ze hard op het verslaan van de vijand. Zal het hen lukken om een manier te bedenken om de buitenaardse wezens te verslaan? Wordt Bean een leider?
Mijn mening
Dit boek speelt zich tegelijkertijd af met Ender’s game. Dat verhaal gaat over Ender Wiggins en zijn training aan Battle School. Bean en Ender worden vrienden. In Ender’s shadow lees je het verhaal door de ogen van Bean.
Het is een fascinerend verhaal en ik ben erg benieuwd hoe het verder gaat met het verhaal.
